In the case of an alternative timeline, everything starts from the same point, from the same temporality, from the same Universe.
Time travel gives you access to the future, the past, but also to alternative timelines (provided there are any).
By going back in time you can create a loop, create new timelines by modifying events, you can also change the present and the future (it all depends on how the Universe works), and even make these timelines interact with each other.
