Megas are a fun concept. Your favorite gets a super form. It completely breaks competitive by over centralizing the game around a handful of Game Freak selected Pokemon, and forces you to pre-commit to a mega, meaning if you have a bad match-up, you're just screwed. The universal and dynamic nature of Dynamax and Tera mean you can always find a good user of it in any matchup. Furthermore it has offensive and defensive (especially in Tera's case) uses as opposed to Megas which were largely just "it hits harder."

Dynamax would be okay if it didn't have the stupid swirling clouds. Tera would be okay if it didn't have the stupid hats. I understand why they made those visual indicators, but they could have made a different visual indicator that doesn't infringe on the actual aesthetic of the gimmick itself, like the status ailment indicators that go on your HP bar or whatever.

So yeah, only megas and z moves are really visually appealing to me. Coincidentally they are also infinitely more balanced from a gameplay perspective on account of actually consuming an item slot.

dynamax is slightly better since all pokemon can dynamax but gigantimax forms have that same frustrating exclusivity of megas.
Z-moves are better because again all pokemon can use them. very useful for rock types whose only good physical moves have dogshit accuracy and z moves don't miss.
Terra is again used by all pokemon but adds a lot more thought in terms of strategies than the zmoves.

That's the best part. You see a mega-capable pokemon in the team preview and most of the time you instantly know what to expect. With every other gimmick, you have to play the stupid mixup game against every single pokemon for every single turn of the battle until your opponent uses it.

Megas in practice are just stronger ultra beasts and paradox mons. There is no gimmick. If you want to balance them in VGC, then nerf Kang/Gar in generation 10 and put the mega pseudos into the restricted pool where they originally belonged.

Only mega and tera are even worth talking about, Z moves could have been cool with stuff like the buffed versions of boosting or status moves but the fact they were relegated to nukes 99% of the time ruined them and dynamax is a joke. Tera is cool in theory but having both of the pokemon's types cancel out lets you do too much bullshit with not enough counterplay, doesn't help that most pokemon tera into the same few types. Megas are objectively the best,even if most are hideous and the distribution of them was dogshit. They should just keep them as a thing going forward, what few shitmon that got one really appreciated finally being able to have a true niche.

Haven't played SV and SS so correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't their gimmicks basically unused outside of leaders and evil teams (and raids)? In game megas are probably the worst implemented as barely any opponent uses them. Z-moves however were actually used by random ace trainers on like every other route. To me that made them feel really natural to the region, and despite it's flaws, why I don't hate them entirely.
