There are mons with subpar stats but amazing movesets that you wouldn't mind using, like Wigglytuff. Always able to find a role in every team and possibly save moveslots.
There are mons carried by their ability like Shedinja, it's easy to counter until the opponent gets too cocky and ends up stuck with a mon completely unable to damage it.
There are mons who have both subpar stats AND nothing impressive in their moveset, that's where you are really just making your team weaker for absolutely no gain. Can't think of an example right now but there are several depending on the gen.
And finally you have completely unusable jokes like Unown. No amount of coping will make it work.
