It was seen as a complete departure from the series. It was another monster catcher with Pokemon slapped onto it. It'd be like taking Palworld and the Pokemon logo on it.

Not allowing a single Pokemon (other than Magikarp) into the game from four previous generations was a bad move. If they wanted they could have done something similar to Hoenn where it was primarily new Pokemon, but there were still some familiar faces to remind you it's the same series.

Imagine if you were some superhero movie fan, and you paid money to watch a new Justice League movie because you love Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman, but the new Justice League movie doesn't feature Superman or Batman or any of the actual Justice League members you know and love. Instead there's a whole bunch of OCs that look like shitty knockoffs of Superman or Batman but gayer and with more pointless details all over their costumes. You feel absolutely ripped off because you watch Justice League movies over say Marvel specifically because you like Superman and Batman, but now you just watched a movie without those characters. Sure, the movie is technically a Justice League movie, and those new OCs are technically Justice League characters, but it's just not the same without Superman and Batman. In fact, without those old characters, how is the movie you watched even Justice League instead of Marvel Avengers or some entirely new OC superhero team?

The Johto dex is by far the most forgotten because Game Freak didn't use them properly in GSC and HGSS didn't fixed anything. Unova was them actually learning from Johto's complete failure

For the worse. The amount of Gen 1 pandering in 6 and 7 and to an extent 8, is unforgivable. Because of this, gen 8 is really the only one of the three that has any sort of identity.

Don't forget a lot of the coolest mons being inaccessible until late-game and having brutally high leveling curves. Volcarona and Hydreigon are cool as shit and they thought it'd be a good idea to put them behind the same kind of lock and key that a lot of the best mons from Gen 2 and Gen 1 were under without realizing that the games succeeded in spite of, rather than because of, stuff like that.
