Obviously, they fucked up a bunch of things. Difficulty for one, ended up being minimal with Mega Evolution and GF not taking into account how badly the exp share overlevels the player.
The game also didn't have much post game, but that was expected at the time for a new release.
ORAS though, had no excuse to be shitty, and it's what started the "Gamefreak is lazy" criticism.
