where did this dumbfuck meme start? XY's pacing is slower than BW's even after the 3rd gym. BW has literally only one route between each gym the entire fucking game.

This. Gym 1-3 of XY actually has the exact same number of routes as BW's entire campaign, even counting optional ones like Route 17 and 18

I think I got to like the 5th gym in BW in the amount of time it took me to get to the 2nd gym in XY.

I think that opinion is formed in relation of the rest of the game itself, and not to other games. like, the beginning of XY has more content between gyms than usual. so during the first few hours, you build up expectations for the rest of the game expecting it to be just as content packed, but then when it turns out to be mostly just the pace of a regular Pokemon game, your expectations are let down and disappointed.
and inversely, the beginning of BW is such a slog, that when the pace picks up and you start having some agency, it feels refreshing and forms a positive impression.

Which is impressive because BW has some of the slowest pacing in the whole franchise because it keeps shoving unskippable cutscenes into your face, a problem that gens 6 onward would make even worse, culminating in Gen 7 where the first hour of "game" is more cutscene than gameplay.
