>>56214421The video’s bad for a different reason than most ITT would think. The author grossly mischaracterizes May and Dawn by attributing them to being in relation to Misty’s attitude with such stretches as “they’re more of the same in aggressive and snarky attitude”, which is completely false in comparison to Misty as May and Dawn were far more tame in their attitude towards Ash. In addition, the author claims that Misty wouldn’t be kind and caring to Ash if he fell ill like Serena had, which is untrue as Misty does just this in "The Stun Spore Detour”. It gives off a strong impression that the author had not watched anything pre XY aside from tweets and popular summaries. A lot of parallels can be drawn between May/Dawn, Serena/Dawn, and Serena/May. Also, Iris should have been touched on a lot more rather than a passing remark as she’s far more in line with Misty’s attitude.
In terms of talking about Serena, it’s the usual “first companion that’s actually just nice to everyone” deal that we’re all accustomed to, but little was given to her actually development on the terms of her quitting something she didn’t like doing, finding what she wanted to do, and pursuing it even though she fails at first and fails at the height of it all.
There’s also no addressing of criticism detractors like to pin on Serena, such as her being a simp (hard to be a simp when you leave your crush in the end to pursue what you like to do rather than cling onto him through Alola), and her snowball scene being what “she” sees Ash as (even though Ash told her that she was right to call him out as he abandoned his own advice of never giving up that he constantly promoted).
The video’s biggest sin is doing the same thing that fans of the other girls do to Serena, which is mischaracterize the other characters either due to ignorance, or bad faith.
