Should Pokemon have changed protagonists earlier rather than having Ash all the way through Gen 8?
The problem with keeping Ash is it made all of his relationships between himself and his friends/team (other than Pikachu) seem increasingly shallow as the series progressed because you knew he’d just toss them aside in the end because of his autistic need to start fresh with each new region. It’s like trying to get invested in a relationship between James Bond and one of his love interests when you know she’ll be gone and replaced in the next film.
Honestly they should have kept him as the primary protagonist through Johto and then had a new person be the primary focus. I wonder what they’ll do in the future- will Liko be the protagonist for gen 10 and dump Roy, Dot, her cat and her turtle, or will there be a new protagonist for that gen?
