I didn't go through this part on my first playthrough, I used cycling road. Neither did I go through Seafoam island, and surfed from the starter town to the south. When I discovered that you can go south from Lavender town, and that it's possible to take the long route to Cinnabar from the Fuchsia beach, I loved it, as completely optional areas full of amazing water pokemons and it changed me into ice/water trainer. I use to laugh at the bug catcher, fishers or hikers and could never imagine myself being single type trainer, till I found those routes.
