To make it a hard game by Pokemon standards? Just add the modified EXP formula and beef up Grant and Korrina's levels and give them some better coverage. You'll get a decent run with the first three gym leaders + the trainer battles that can catch you offguard like the Furfrou double battle which is about what you'd expect in any other game.

Don't think its difficulty so much as being designed to blast through in like 4 hours, but to make it short while also making it still recognizable as Kalos:
>nix the amie crit, dodge, and sturdy boost. Amie is a cute feature but the benefits are way overtuned. At most, make the chances of breaking out of paralysis, sleep or confusion slightly better for the player pokemon
>party exp share with the generation 5 formula and divvying up the total EXP gained instead of generating more for the party
>ease up the gift pokemon, keep either the kanto starters or the lucario and ditch everything else
I'd also revise the gym leaders a little bit if I had a handy website to do it instead of typing everything down.

I touched up the gym leaders a bit, and there are a few other changes I'd make too.
>Starter Mega Stones hidden in the world instead of handed out
>Lucario gift no longer comes with the Lucarionite, it's now given when you show Korrina a max affection Lucario
>Lapras is now a trade, needing a Carbink from Reflection Cave for it
>The box legend isn't caught until after the Lysandre fight
I also plan on making changes to the Elite 4, champion, rival, and Lysandre fights.

I used Pokemon Showdown to make the teams, exported to Pokepastes using the button, then just snipping tooled them into MS Paint.

probably really late by now but I changed up the gym leaders a little bit. I was trying to balance the teams around the TMs given out by their fights and the type of characters the gym leaders are, but some of the TMs available in XY are ass and I wanted to be mindful of restrictions like those. They're not that hard at all but my goal was "not super braindead" while being recognizable as gym leader fights, being a mishmash between the OG fights and a scrubbed down version of this guy's >>56218327 chart.
