Makes sense to me, you can't move any shadow pokemon the mainline and it would lose a lot of the edge appeal if it was just a reskin without the mechanic

The way Gen 6 portrays it doesn't necessarily contradict 7 either. You can easily figure you need a strong bond for the Pokémon to willingly suffer for you like that. iirc XY left it open.
