In nu-Pokemon (Gen 6 onward) I usually go through the game with an unevolved starter. The rest of my team can evolve, but I like to try and get as much usage as possible out of my little buddy like in the Ashime. Since the newer games are so fucking easy it actually adds a nice little challenge to try and finish important battles using a small friend.
