Literally the entire Gen2 dex on release. game freak did not want them to be popular at at, went out their way to hide them or shove them in the back ground so that GenWun Pokémon could get more shilling, only after nearly a decade after did TPC finally accept that people actually liked a good portion of Gen2 mons and finally started acknowledging some of them but even now they’re still reluctant to do so.

Maybe Gardevoir? It's gotten more shilling since then, but it was just planned as wally's ace in the beginning, right? Plus the earliest a psychic type's been available is pretty neat even if it is rare. Aegislash is another "naturally" popular pokemon, but the form changing/ability+typing+signature move is a little shilly. Luxray absolutely. It's basically been given nothing, has basically no appearence since gen 4, but is still wildly popular. Flygon has also been given nothing basically too.

There are far worse shit in both gen 8 and 9 but I think it gets hate specifically because it feels like the epitome of SS' rushed development. Gen 8 just has so many pokemon that feel like half baked ideas someone made then had no one actually look at to review. Calyrex is just the cherry on top.

Croagunk. It has been shilled fairly hard by GF despite having a number of things against it like being a prevo, not being OP in game, and having a design that didn't aim to be traditionally cool or cute. I don't really get why they go in so hard with him but I'm all for it honestly, this line is by far one of the best things that came from Sinnoh.

Wouldn't really say the prevo thing matters when that's generally pretty common (Pikachu, Meowth, Jigglypuff), but it definitely has a lot of presence for something that's relatively unconventional. I think it's probably something "lost in translation" like the differences in perception with Tingle by western and Japanese audiences.

Eiscue is actually somewhat well-liked, though (unless that was the point of the post). It ranks on polls for Galar mons (not usually super high, but it ranks) and it has a decent amount of merch too. This is one where almost all of its hate is localized to small circles like up-their-own-ass artists who feel like it doesn't "do enough" and mentally unwell /vp/ schizoids.

Ice face Eiscue is cute, but I've never been able to get into Noice face Eiscue.
It's definitely a Pokemon that got caught up as collateral with Dexit + the reveal of the starters and things like Carkoal when they first got leaked here.

Something had to fill the void, and Chandelure is strong, is part ghost (easy popularity points) as well as helps justify being in object, has a gothic look that jells well for fans of ghost type, starts of cute and becomes cool. Has a unique face that’s also expressive Ana easily readable

There's well over 1000 Pokemon but only handful a generation is considered worthy to be used for promotional purposes. There's more non-shillmons than shillmons. Tho one can argue that entire first generation as a group is a shillmon considering the importance of 150/151 number in early promotional materials.

Does Chandelure appear often in the anime? The movies? TGC? How much was it shown off in previews? Does it even have merch outside of standard merch every single Pokémon gets like Sitting Cuties?
