My headcanon is that Volo's team was made specifically made to beat Cynthia's and somehow knew via spacetime fuckery that someone, probably Cynthia herself, would be sent back to stop him. However, Arceus decided to send (you) back instead after defeating Cynthia in BDSP as PLA canonically takes place afterwards. PLA is the real BDSP postgame and ends with you returning to the present for another showdown with Arceus with full knowledge of what to do with the azure flute, and more importantly, where to go.
