This is NOT TRUE. I mean, it sort of is, but the way it's framed here it's misleading
Nintendo made 11 billion dollars last (fiscal) year.
This is taking into account whatever Nintendo made from every game sold, every Nintendo Switch console sold, every Nintendo Switch Online subscription sold, licensing fees, profit from the Mario Movie, etc. This is of course revenue, not net income, so whatever they spent for the year in game development, marketing, manufacturing, etc. isn't factored in.
10.8 billion is the total amount of money consumers spent on licensed Pokemon products on retail last year. This means every Pikachu plush, hoodie, coffee mug, keychain, etc. Possibly cards too. The thing is The Pokemon Company DID NOT make 10.8 billion last year, they made roughly 2 billion.
Licensors don't actually make that much money. Most of the revenue from toy sales and such goes towards the manufacturer and the retailer, with the licensor ending up with the thinnest slice of the pie. It is however essentially free money which is why it's such a big priority for companies to own valuable IP.
It gets even tricker when you take into account that TPC's ownership is split into three between Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures. Inc. That means our beloved Game Freak, developer of the Pokemon mainline series owned to this day by Satoshi Tajiri, made no more than a billion out of Pokemon last year (plus whatever cut they get from the sales of mainline games). That's still a lot of money, but it isn't the unbelieavable pile of gold people make it seem like it is.
