Is this the most egregious form of Kanto shilling? Or was it the 4 episode long Charizard commercial that released earlier that year?

It makes sense in the context that this was the first mainline 3D game. Objectively those three are the most iconic and well-known Pokemon besides Pikachu. Getting to see use them in 3D is fun. Its just a shame that the 3D looks like ass.

You’re not wrong? But I feel people would would upset if any set of starters replaced any others. The only starters you’d get away with replacing are the Gen5 ones since even among gen5 fans they aren’t that popular as a group. (Despite the amount of hate Gen2’s starters get, gen2 fans generally like them)

I think it's the mix of that, plus the Alain specials, the fact that Charizard got 2 different megas and that all 5 of their megas have busted stats. No Gen VI pokemon have megas by the way.

In a perfect world Sun/Moon would give you Johto starters, Swoshi would give you Hoenn starters and ScarletVoilet would give you Sinnoh starters. Having a second starter is fun.

No they weren't thinking at all, that's the point. They didn't give too much of a shit about Kalos pokemon. Years later that point still stands because they were smarter to give Alola and Galar pokemon their own exclusive Z-moves and gigantamax alongside the usual Kanto shilling, the result being these new pokemon becoming way more popular.

There's absolutely no problem in getting a second starter, but that usually only happens during post-game or in the second part of the game like in the case of Gen II. The XY starters are treated like second-class citizens in their own game because you play the whole main game with a second way more popular and overpowered starter you instantly get for free.

The Austismos in the fanbase had a massive meltdown over not being able to use Charizard from the get go in B/W so they played it extremely safe and put in as many kanto references as possible. I mean the Santalune forest in the beginning of the game is 1 to 1 with Viridin forest and the first wild encounter in the game is always programed to be a pidgey
