I'd pick convergents over regionals.

There's plenty of animals that look similar to each other, so it'd be fun for Pokemon to do the same. Besides, it makes "delta/alt types" of a Pokemon possible without convoluted biology.

Regionals are fun concept but it comes at the cost of its extremely limited distribution, requiring you to either transfer Pokemon over games or buy DLC if it has them.

Convergent Pokémon all the way. I’d rather have a new Pokémon that takes inspiration from an existing Pokémon while also being its own thing, rather than a replacement that makes the original Pokémon worthless and won’t even be available in the next generation.

convergent pokemon are super lazy and no one cares if real life animals also have convergent evolution
regional forms just cant appear again outside of the region they were found in and were obvious nostalgia bait when they were announced.
