Why is this thing steel type? It would make much more sense as a Dark/Fairy
I know its because its jaws are made of steel but thats a lame explanation, nothing about the design siggests its steel type, dark fits a lot better

My guess is that the devs changed it from a Dark type to a Steel type due to the lack of a Steel type that wasn't totally weak for the early game in RSE.

I don't think people realize how common this is, Frilish/Jellicent's ghost typing and stunfisk's typing were confirmed to be solely to more evenly distribute the types across the dex. Hell, it was even confirmed that Hoenn initially had nothing from prior gens at all, but this resulted in such terrible type diversity that they saw no choice but to add in older pokemon.

The pokedex says the mouth is a derived set of metal horns. That's why it lives in caves- because it's SE against most stuff and makes an easy living. Always made sense to me

It's a counterpart to Sableye in that they're both shitmons that type combos that make them better than they would be otherwise despite those types making little

>Dark/Ghost gives Sableye no weaknesses (prior to Fairy), but nothing about it is really ghostly. It's a cave gremlin that eats rocks

Dark/Fairy and Steel/Dark would honestly be just as appropriate for them

It's from an interview with Sugimori in Nintendo Dream

>Sugimori: “These were created by one of our design team’s newcomers all by themselves. At first these designs were modeled after a prince and princess, but during the balancing phase of development, Ghost was added to their typing. The Frillish family’s original designer was disappointed that they ended up as scary Pokémon.”

They were just meant to be cute Pokemon based royalty.

Something similar happened with Stunfisk, who was originally Water/Electric but got redesigned and changed to Ground/Electric for balancing.

I always thought her type was more of a bear trap reference, since her mythological influence Futakuchi Onna falls more into fairy or ghost type.

And it's a shame her Mega wasn't retconned with a Gorgon by giving her more mouths, for example her side bangs and maybe two more behind her head.

Despite everything, her design is beautiful like a type of noble lady from feudal Japan.
