Colloquially it is a group of arthropods and small creatures such as arachnids, insects, terrestrial mollusks, terrestrial crustaceans, myriapods, vermiforms, and more. Just think of the Pixar movie Bugs.

Pokemon uses the colloquial term, so Pokemon like Golisopod, Shelmet, Ariados, Shuckle, Scolipede, fall into this category. There wouldn't even be a problem with Orthworm being in this type, but for balance it's better to stay as pure Steel.
With Armaldo it seems more like a nod to the fact that these are the ancestors of the terrestrial arthropods.
