They are two different characters in two different universes with two different objectives. Red was meant to be a self-insert legendary badass figure whom players should look up to, whereas Ash was meant to be a fun goofy dork with iconic savage moments. Yeah, Ash was kind of a loser, but that was what made him appealing.
