The majority of megas were forgettable and/or sucked ass.
Did anyone care for mega steelix? Mega aggron? Mega fucking obamamasnow? Mega scizor? Mega heracross? Mega bannette? I could go on and on.
There's a few cases of shitmons getting viable due to extreme minmaxing (kanga, mawile, beedrill) and rest of popular megas are mega shillmons (lucario, charizard etc).
Megas are as shitty of a gimick as any other, no one would seriously consider mega venusaur/blastoise to be better than their gmax forms, it's all equally forgettable gimmick trash

Houndoom's my 2nd favorite Mega. I do kinda wish it was just a normal evolution for it though.
Worst part is I'm pretty sure you can't get Houndoom and the Houndoomite in the same game. Pretty sure multiple other Pokemon have that problem as well.
Like sure it encourages training, but what if I want to use it in a plain playthrough? You've just severed a bunch of Megas from that.

It’s one of the only Megas that’s actually well thought out. I used it a lot before ORAS released.
>base form is legitimately good on its own and doesn’t need to be stapled to the mega stone perpetually just to be viable
>base form still has a reason to be used even with the mega stone because of its different type and abilities, so the mid battle transformation gimmick is actually leveraged and not entirely pointless from clicking it turn 1 every game
>mega is still a legitimate upgrade unlike dogshit like Garchomp and Tyranitar but not obnoxiously broken like Salamence

It’s basically a template for what every Mega should have been but instead they wasted the mechanic giving it to a dozen shitmons that should’ve just had a normal evolution.

Most people feel pretty positively about it at least as far as the design goes

Mega Houndoom's issue was that its ability doesn't work with its best sets. It liked having mixed attacking options (pursuit and sucksr punch) instead of going all in on nasty plot.

Give the gatekeeper of the underworld some love. Give it a new ability that turns all its attacks into pursuit. Give it dumb 50/50s with sucker punch.

Megas are just divisive
Really, I find that most people who like megas tend to like the idea of their favorite getting megas.
Those of us who actually got their favorites mega evolved realize that, in general, Megas are just ugly to look at. So much so, that most of us would prefer if we weren't encouraged to butcher our favorite designs if we wanted to use them.

M Gyarados always seemed like the prototype for Dynamax and Tera for just those reasons. The idea that it's not just a "press on turn one" option and there should be strategy on when or if to use it.

Gyarados was first and Kangaskhan next, but mega Gengar and Salamence both got used by VGC masters winners later, along with the primals. Lots of high-placing teams used others like Garchomp and Tyranitar.

Fuck them, Gyarados, the pokemon famous for its village-destroying rage, evolving into a superversion of himself that potentiates its evil impulses is kino, the dragon inspiration excuse doesn't work when that's already fulfilled when Magikarp evolves into Gyarados, if the carp-turned-dragon wasn't a dragon type already then there's no reason it should gain it after getting a power up

Your one of the lucky few.
There are 3 megas that are more appealing than their base form, giving Mega evolution ~6% success rate in designs.
Every other one is, at best, on par with their base form (Beedrill, Alakazam, Absol, Abomasnow, and Diancie) or immediate massive downgrade (every other mega).

Good design.
To give Gamefreak at least a little credit, Scizor is such a solid piece of design, that creating a follow up to it was a losing battle.
So, while Scizor is better than Mega Scizor by a mile, its probably the best you could've done.
