I want a rom hack where you suffer at the bottom of the food chain because I love underdog stories so much. My ideal one would be as follows
>world where Pokemon training is insanely expensive and trainers are usually from extremely wealthy families
>would be based on the USA so you would also have to pay for each visit to the Pokemon center

Uhhhhhh, I love the concept but none really come to mind.
Maybe Rocket Edition, since you start as a lowly grunt with a Rattata and stolen Pidgey, but work your way up.
Then iirc in Reborn you're not particularly low class or anything, but you're pretty much fighting and catching weak Pokemon in slums early on.

Actuallu, there is Pokemon Outlaw too, never played it myself though.

agree with the guy above, it might be a bit much. with this number you risk having 7+ encounters on a route, which some people appreciate, but your fakemon might get a little lost in the noise. if you want your fakemon to shine, I would cut down the official pokemon a little bit. but, it also depends on how big your region is and what kind of distribution methods you have for pokemon.
before you settle on a final dex, I would go location by location and map out which pokemon you want where, so that you know you have room to fit all of them. you might find stuff you want to cut in that process.

yeah we've all seen it David. I'm not gonna sit here and figure out what number of pokemon are optimal for you.
start with what you have, go location by location and make sure all the pokemon you want fit comfortably. you can make cuts as necessary, or maybe it won't be necessary.
also ask yourself if you're gonna have any alternate forms of pokemon distribution, like...dexnav exclusives, hidden grottos, gift/trade pokemon, any unique encounters or systems you're planning...
the number you have is fine, it's just a little smaller than the Kalos dex..the only thing is, like I said, if you have all those encounters crammed into routes, your fakemon are going to be overshadowed.
people like having huge dexes in games with official pokemon, because we're familiar with all those pokemon. but if it's a fakemon game, the fakemon should be the star. so just make sure they aren't getting sidelines.

Those already exist, like Luminescent Platinum. And they're working on the decomp.

This is essentially gonna be 3D Pokemon essentials, so lots of freedom and customization with ease. Also native on windows/Linux so no emulation, will run on a toaster.

It depends, if youre making lots of assets yeah, you'll get nowhere.

I imagine most people will recycle assets from Switch games and a few public available models for naps. The only custom models people will make will be a few trainers and those will likely use the Switch models as a base.

Making 3D Pokemon models, even just say a dozen of them sounds like a pain. They each probably learn like 100+ moves and you gotta make sure the animations aren't total ass.

I think another thing to realize is most fangame developers won't be transitioning over to the BSDP decomp (which I assume is in Unity). I highly doubt a lot of them can go from RPG Maker to Unity considering how different they are. The subset of people who can make the transition might also decide a better use of their time would be to make their own game.

Right now I'm most looking forward to the natdex hack based off of Luminescent Platinum.

it's not bad, pretty solid attempt at an official style map. personally I think there's just a smidge too much empty green space. official maps don't waste a lot of space. I would either compress the map by bringing the right side buildings in closer, or think of some doodad or environmental feature to break up the monotony of the grass. especially around the gym, behind the mart, and around the map connections.

any reason you're using R/S tilesets over Emerald? just curious cause Emerald has better tools for hacking these days if you're working on an R/S rom for some reason, but if it's just aesthetic preference then carry on

Aesthetic preference. Want to go for almost a "beta" feeling, inspired by screenshots like picrel in this case. Basically, it'll be like if R/S took a slightly different path during development. Probably sounds super boring and unambitious to most hack creators, but its an idea I've had in my head for many years.

There was a demo posted here similar to that, Pokemon Verdant. It has a new region you had to get a gym license from rich sponsors, the rival was an Andrew Tate wannabe, and the evil team were a bunch of communists. It's essentials though.

yes for sure, but they use space very smartly. the official gba maps are actually quite compact, for the most part. and keep in mind that at the player view distance, even just one or two tiles make a lot of difference. I think even just moving the buildings on the right a little closer would make a big difference like I said, I made a quick mockup. but that's just my preference, at the end of the day it has to look good to you, maybe test it out in game and see how it feels.
npcs will help it feel filled out too. I would maybe add a sign or some flowers near the map connections just for some visual noise. because you don't want npcs too close to map connections because of the way they load in.
anyway I'm really just nitpicking, it is solid. just try to tighten up and focus your maps wherever you can, that's what I've been learning.

Future towns could probably use some more diversity in the tilesets, separate little areas like bodies of waters or a beach, maybe landmarks or something that stands out idk but I'm sure you already know that. Since this is just a starting town it's pretty solid I'd say.

To be more clear here’s an image edit the empty space above the pokemart’s previous location would be good for some sort of communal garden or npcs wandering around spewing flavor text about your RomHack’s features. The space in between the mart and longhouse would be nice for the garden I displaced.

For a fakemon fangame, would 152 Fakemon with 150 realmons be a good balance? The region size can fit as low as 3 encounters per location to as many as 5 without feeling cluttered.

Peridot catch rate feels weird in your game, is this intentional or is this just how gen 2 was? Trying to start a nuzlocke and 2 runs in a row I ran out of all 5 pokeballs trying to catch a level 7 nidoran on route 2 while bringing them down to red health. 3rd run and it took 4 balls.
All 3 times jt was nidoran (2 female, 1 male) and I know their catch rate isn't bad.

Not the dev, but crystal isn't slow in battle and the overworld stops being slow once you have the bike and fly. If you already feel the need to speed it up then maybe instead of adding another dialogue box to make the experience slower overall just stop and read when it asks you for input.

The problem is, when you go to replace a move in Crystal, like most pokemon games you expect there to be a pause/delay/confirmation dialogue at the end of the string of text boxes you get before learning the move. However in Crystal there is none of that, when the last text box appears it goes away and it's like a 1 frame window before the moves pop up. No delay, no confirmation, nothing, just you are going from hitting A to picking a move in a single frame which can easily cause you to hit A twice while trying to get through dialogue. You're also a disingenuous faggot if you are suggesting you've never once accidentally replaced a move in older pokemon games.

No natures, no abilities, shitty moves, shitty mons, and just haphazardly slapping LGPE BP and Fairy type into the game doesn't help at all. In fact it probably hurts more than it helps. The balance wasn't made for only dark to be changed to physical or for mons to be learning Draining Kiss at level 11.

I think people are just excited to have a decent new region hack to play. they don't come out that often. let them enjoy the honeymoon period. fangames are rarely balanced on release anyway, I think you either just have to overlook that a bit or wait until a later release. you provide good criticism and hopefully the dev will take it into account if they plan to update the game, no need to be a dick about it though

NTA but I've beaten both Murphy and Falkner with no losses during the gym challenge and playing with hardcore nuzlocke rules. I lost my starter to not being able to flee from rinring as it outsped and bit him to death flinching twice. Every single bite mon I faced in the early game was an extreme threat. It does feel a bit weirdly balanced with gen 2 jank mechanics (like leech seed happening after the opponent moves instead of at the end of the turn) clashing with new OP moves and typing. So I sort of agree with him

Hacks that make day and night cycles for pokemon shouldn't exist unless they immediately provide a way in game to change the time whenever you want. Is there like a simple graphic patch that just updates/upgrades Emerald's tilesets without changing anything else?

It's been a while since I last checked but It's unbelievable no one tried. I remember people were already ripping Diamond/Pearl assets and "backporting" them as sprites in Ruby, and that was on Pokemon forums in 2010.
It's been 15 years and we still don't have a fanmade visual overhaul?
I'd get it if romhacking fully moved to Gen 4+ but let's be honest, we're still largely stuck on Gen 3 from what I can tell.
I was 100% sure we'd have a fan remaster by 2015 at worst but Nintendo managed to give us actual remakes sooner, it's insane.
Maybe I always overestimated the amount of people that finds Gen 3 graphics unpleasant to look at

I think the main problem with trying to remaster Gen 3’s graphics with gen 4 assets is that it’s ripping 3D to 2D and doesn’t look too good. I remember seeing the DSPt in BW art style and thinking it looked nice though.

I don't mind the real-time clock and I think unique encounters and events during specific times are cool but it'd be nice if there was some sort of resting spot where you could choose to rest until a certain time so there's some way of manipulating it without being overly convenient.

Yup and that's all I asked for, a way to change the time. It's really stupid that I either have to just stop playing and play at a different time or go through the monotony of moving my save to my PC, changing my PC time, booting up retroarch, hoping that the time change in game "just works" (sometimes it doesn't, which is also why I can't do it on my phone), catch what I want, save, move the save back onto my phone, fix the time on my PC, and then continue playing. The whole ordeal is like 10-15 minutes of just bullshit. When there could simply be an option like checking a clock/watch and then having an option that allows you to rest until the next time change.

Repel manipping is fun, but it does mean that the "rare" encounter is no longer rare to anyone who knows how it works. I'd rather the rare mon be harder to get and some other mon be manippable. I think there should be 1 manip every 2-3 routes imo. I think they are fun, especially for nuzlocking, even if the mons aren't omega busted. You can choose to go with the guaranteed pick, even if it's middle of the road or risk going for the pick that might give you a sentret but could also give you groudon. The manip could also mean you get a dupes clause later on that might help with securing another mon.

You could also make the rare manippable, to make the odds slightly higher, but have another 1-2 mons with a higher chance of appearing at the same manip level. I still would rather the rare not be manippable though.

It's a reward for going out of your way to try and manipulate the encounters. You'd only know for sure what each encounter table is if you looked it up, and if you did that you'd grind encounters anyway. It's a good way to reward people for experimenting.

Actually since both pc and consoles have a team red(AMD/Nintendo), team green(Xbox/Nvidia), and a team blue(Intel/Sony, Sega before them), and rgb lighting has become the dominant tech aesthetic of the last decade or so, having 3 forms of this in those colors and the shiny be rainbow (kinda like minior) would work really well.

It's not very powerful in Peridot either. It's very frail and only has 50 attack on top of being a friendship evolution. You need to really babysit it to get it to evolve.
But 75 speed is really good for early game, and having STAB flinches so early probably isn't a great idea when you have nothing to resist it.

One idea that keeps floating in my head is a remake of the Kanto and Johto regions that are more accurate to their real counterparts: Kanto, Chuubu, and Kansai. There's a lot in these regions that doesn't show up in Pokemon, and Tokyo is a lot larger and more Urban than how it's depicted. Chuubu also deserves way more love, and makes for an ideal starting location.

For the dex, it'd be a larger and curated list of the Japanese mons + mons for future gens that are suitable for Japan like Tatsugiri, Kingambit, Ogrepon, etc....

Not quite, as the idea is to take what's there, and make it bigger. OG Kanto is actually really small compared to modern regions, as such, a ton gets left out from real life Kanto. So the idea would be to take what's already there and expand it in scale and density. The urban parts of Kanto should feel way more Urban. For example, Saffron is Chiyoda, Celadon is mean to be Shinjuku, Vermilion is meant to be Yokohama...

But there's to a lot of major Tokyo landmarks that are straight up missing. There's no Skytree, no Tokyo Tower, no Rainbow Bridge, no Shibuya Crossing, no Imperial Palace (Goldenrod which is based on Osaka as well is also missing Osaka Castle - and the Radio Tower which is based on the Tsutenkaku needs more love).

Kabukicho as well is "in" Celadon, sorta, through the game corner, but its depiction could be so much better giving it the seedy back-alley vibe it actually has. Whereas the way its shown is just sorta there. Shinjuku Gyoen is meant to be Erika's Gym, but wouldn't it be cooler of there was a huge garden just off of Celadon, full of wild Pokemon, and inside there's a shrine, and that's where you fight Erika?

And I haven't even mentioned Chuubu. Like Mt. Silver is Mt. Fuji, but irl Mt. Fuji also has a city at its base (Fujinomiya), wouldn't that and the trek up Mt. Silver be a more suitable place for the Pokemon Championship?

Stuff like that, basically.

We have the Kanto we have due to the limitations of the past, and nostalgia, but in all truth, Kanto is quite boring compared to how it could be.

Is there anything like radical red but it keeps the gameplay of gen 1-3 with no split but other stuff like modern items, evolutions, and megas?

Yes, if you had the source code for the hack but that is not the case with most hacks. Instead you'll have to make the changes directly to the rom file. But with all of the gen3 hacking tools out there it's still extremely easy.

Well I just discovered a bug.
Activate Exp.All and have a Pokémon hold Exp. Share at the same time. The Pokémon fighting will see its experience split in half, and all the Exp. All bonuses will be based on this half of the xp gained. However, the Pokémon holding the Exp. Share won't get its 50% share of the xp.
Or if it does, there's no in-game prompt that it did.

I don't mind that they don't stack, that's fair, but the fighting 'mon shouldn't lose half of its gains IMO.

That's just how it functions in gen 1. Halves the lead's exp gain and distributes the rest to everyone else.

Obviously a bad idea for mon designs, but AI making models and textures for environments with minor touch ups will probably be the norm I think. I think we'll unfortunately get a mot of AI designed fakemons though. I dont mind AI for environments, but for characters or Pokemon it's definitely gonna be cringe.

Every romhack I play ends up being disappointing, but having features I wish other romhacks had. I wish I could just take all the best features from every romhack and put them into 1 ultimate game tbqh.

>Emerald Rogue's game settings
battle animation speed, toggle running shoes, multiple sound settings that aren't just "stereo/mono", etc
>Radred's dexnav
>some sort of system to change natures/IVs/abilities
don't care which as long as it's not too easy but also not a chore (mints, capsules, and IV food seem fine)

pick good mons you don't need rattata furret zigzagoon bidoof and lillipup for instance just pick 1 shitty "Route 1 normal mon"
>new region
or at the very least new story in old region (with expanded areas and new dungeons and perhaps new characters or characters from other pokemon games like how Radred had the Team Rocket Admins and Johto Gym leaders)
>no difficulty mode garbage as I want every person to have the same experience playing
Like early Drayano levels of difficulty (not shitty vanilla, but also not some kaizo shit think Firered Omega or SG/SS)
>the split
>gen 8 battle mechanics
>player customization of some sort with preferably more than 2 protags you can choose from
>no optional nuzlocke mode
because introducing hard level caps means you no longer have to worry about over leveling and planning your routes/trainers efficiently removing a fun part of hardcore nuzlocking (hard level caps means you just grind your mon to the cap immediately after you beat a boss and the rest of the game is a joke, this is why Radred is a shitty boss rush)
>day and night cycle, but some way you can rest or pass time in game
>a weather cycle that acts like the day and night cycle, changing what mons you can find on certain routes (with a way to change the overworld weather with pokemon in your party)
>no dynamax, no z-moves, no SV hax

I can't think of anything else right now but so far I think what I got is a good baseline for my dream hack.

I'll add one for you. Semi-open world. It's still structured around routes and cities, but there are no limits to where you can go, so long as you have the means. Like that open world emerald game.

Then, cities become hubs for optional content like quests and such. You can do the leaders in any order and they scale based on badges.

Idk how unbound does it, but some of the best questing I've seen is in the first Xenoblade.

It solves the issue too of "how do you story if open world?"
It's simple, give hub areas such as cities self contained stories structured around quests.

It also solves the stupid issue of having an evil team with a world conquest plot you fight across the region.

Don't do that.

Just make them Yakuza again.

There is a Pokemon clone game called Coromon that I think does individual hubs having problems to solve very well. In that story there are these Titan "pokemon" that end up fucking with a bunch of things which you then have to discover, do some light puzzle solving, and then take on the Titan to make it calm down or surrender or whatever.

It's been a few years since I played it, but I really remember liking the ghost titan because of the way it was haunting a village and causing a bunch of spooky things to happen and I thought it's puzzle and fight were very cool and was very fun thematically. I've heard of all the well known ones like Radical Red, Unbound, Clover, Gaia, Emerald Rogue, Kaizo hacks, and Drayano hacks, but when I go to pokecommunity there is like dozens more that I've never heard of.
