He's only 10. Catching 57 pokemon in under a year at 10 years old is pretty good. He'll have caught them all by the time he's 30.

When I was a kid, I hated Gary. After rewatching some early anime episodes, in memory of Rachael, I’ve concluded that Ash is an incompetent brat and Gary’s the real stand in for protagonists.

You could literally say this for every localized name in the series from Misty to Charizard to Steven Stone. There's no point in doing this.

"Gotta Catch 'Em All!" was a concept of 4kids localization. Ash's goal was never to capture all the Pokemon, only to become Pokemon Master, which only requires you to BEFRIEND all the Pokemon in the world, not capture them, which is a key distinction they made in order to address the original problem they had with the idea of Ash getting his grubby mitts on Legendary and Mythical Pokemon.

They didn't reveal what a Pokemon Master was until the last episode and by then he had already caught a mythical (Meltan) and they had no problem giving them to his companions like Mallow's Shaymin and Goh's Suicune and Regieleki. Also, Gary caught a legendary before Ash with Regidrago
