HGSS were the best of the best classic pokemon games, and Falkner is still to-date the hardest opening gym leader because of Roost and Mudslap; Mudslap is super effective on at least one starter, neutral on the others, and Roost gives the battle plenty of longevity.

overworld encounters were a mistake and make grinding for low rarity pokemon take even longer, jesus fuck i hate randomised overworld encounters. only Ranger did it well.
HMs are a non issue, the only bad one in that gen is Flash which is entirely optional since you are never required to enter a dark cave to progress the story.
Johto is less linear than every other region except gen 1 Kanto and Paldea, you can do the last four badges in any order you want.
