Anyone actually working on a game?
I’m messing around with one and had a question.
I wanted to make a game in which you travel with a companion however, this makes the game heal their and your entire party after every single battle.
I disabled that part, but then normal healing methods don’t work on the companion’s team. To heal their team, I have to unregister them and then register them again, which works but it’s not optimal.
Is there a way to fix this, or should I just have the player control the companion’s party as well? Or maybe have the game go on like normal but have the companion help in certain battles?

Peridot League done! Loved everything about it. Peridotanon really made it feel like a competition and created some very cool effects for it. It was neat.
I'm gonna post a couple of other things, though.
PS: my Steelix carried me hard against the Champion.

That would at least make it more organic, sounds better.
Still though, I have the issue of needing to change the companion’s team if they stick around for long since they’ll end ip underleveled.

No gyms. Game goes like:
>not a trainer

I figured this was a good way to increase difficulty and make sure no one is overleveled.
It’s actually progressing pretty well despite me not wanting to sink a lot of time into it. First town, routes, and dungeons are done, and I made sure to make the NPCs dynamic.

Cool. There's a certain place I need to visit now (well, a couple really), then I'll re-battle the gym leaders, and after that I think that'll be all for me. I don't intend to spend a lot of time at the Battle Subway so I probably won't see every text boxes there is.

Well you could still have a milestone-based level system for your companion. it's probably also possible to just give experience to your companion, but I don't know where I'd begin to implement such a thing.

I know, for now I do like you just said and level up the companion at certain points.
They start out a few levels higher than you and I change the teams here and there.
So far, it’s been ok, but if their pokemon gets hit with a status condition, it stays there until the next party switch.

Some personal feedback on the Battle Simulation, if you don't mind.
1. There aren't enough wild encounters at the volcano. I beat everyone there and somehow only ran into two Pokémon while doing so. And I even walked around a bit because I wanted another Onix to pop out, but it didn't happen.
2. There are way too many wild encounters at the cemetery. It's driving me nuts. I can't go ten steps without being jumped. Doesn't help that I'm trying to figure out the right order to flip the switches to open the final gate.

When the two northern switches are flipped, the two gates leading to the exit should be open. The smaller walls are ledges. I'll see why it breaks between encounters.

Yeah, took me a bit too long to notice this, I have to admit. Anyway, I managed to escape so it's all good.
I have a SameBoy savestate from back when I was still in the graveyard, if you need one (since we can't straight up save in there.)

No, that was a joke because of the frustrations I've had so far with route names.
I don't know what, if anything, Pokemon-related I want to do next. Peridot has already taken up a huge chunk of my time since 2018.

It's just that roof. I don't want to add any kind of background to it because it's used both next to grass and pathways. It's like that in the original game too.

Oh, so the GB scales the assets? 'cause the paths I added were 16x16 blocks (and the squares in your pic appear to be 32x32). I'm not being a smartass, I'm genuinely asking. I don't know anything about tilesets.

My mistake, they're 32x32 tiles, made of 4x4 blocks of tiles.

Strange, does the game constantly feel like the level curve is on your ass like it does in the beginning? Going from the first gym ace being level 16 and the second gym ace being level 18 with like 12 trainers in between was kind of rough trying to keep my pokemon from going over 18.

Well I wanna say "no" but I didn't have any issue with the level curve at the beginning either. I think it got easier after a while, but it must be because I shaped up my team as I went along. I also chose to grind more than once, so I don't think you risk to overlevel your mons by simply walking around.

The starter ball not disappearing until the jingle is complete is weird.
A personal thing, but I'd make the rival take his ball before the text box displays.
The scripted movement in general feels off. There's no sort of delay or anything between when an NPC moves and when the player is forced to move as well.
The base of the pillars on the school appear above the player.
The right-hand door for the school has no warp.
The librarian has no text
Every time you take a step in the classroom, the books flicker above the students' heads.
When using the school's stairs, you come down them facing right.
When standing up against the school, the top of the player is not cast in shadow.
By the Poke Ball at the north of Route 1, the player can see into the void.
The player doesn't exit from doors, they just appear in front of it when leaving a building.
The janny in the first mart being up against the counter is annoying, because he can step down and block the rightmost stairs.
The sign beside the ferry port in Hemlock has no collision, you can walk behind it and even onto the water.
The building also casts no shadow upon the player.
The sailor NPC by the lighthouse can wander onto the stairs and block the player.
Some of the cliff tiles on the lighthouse plateau lack collision.
The tiles above the doors in Hemlock appear below the player when entering buildings.
The first forest area being rainy is cool, as is the Paras you encounter that can benefit from the weather.
There doesn't seem to be any indication of a poisoned Pokemon taking damage in the overworld.
The Birch gym sign appears below the player when the player is behind it.
Tadbop has no back sprite or party icon.
Rockruff has no back sprite either.
Healers not fading to black is weird, especially when you have the music off.
You can see into the void on the eastern part of Basswood City.
The sailors by the boats can walk into the water, and the ground tiles are set to the wrong layer.

The Basswood Gym roof has tiles on the wrong layers.
When the rival comes out of the gym when you try and enter from the side, you're still facing up.
When the rival leaves, there is an extra "/b" before the "Smell ya later"
Rozendendra's name is too long for the battle HUD. The R gets cut off.
Grass seems to be the worst option for a starter. Lots of early bugs/birds in the first couple of routes, then the second rival fight has an evolved starter with no water-type options.
The second gym is equally annoying with its Whimsicott. I didn't catch a Nidoran several routes back, so I'm SOL against it. Unless there's anything to do after this gym battle, I'm all set.

I prefer full as Fakemon tend to clash really hard with realmon. If I'm ever playing a fakemon game it's because I'm so tired of normal pokemon that I want to try something completely fresh. I wouldn't get that same feeling of freshness if I was constantly facing normal pokemon or had any on my team.

again, not saying it's a bad thing. I prefer vanilla-like games myself. but a game like that you need to be able to play a good chunk of to give real feedback.

My ideas:
1. Safari Zone based off of Northwest Trek, but you can use your Pokémon (only one though) to weaken the wild Pokémon before catching it, making it no longer luck based.
2. Haunted manor dungeon with a tragic backstory. Will have a mini boss in the form of an Ariados.
3. Lake based off of Lake Washington that contains a dungeon underwater where you’ll encounter a legendary.
4. Ancient ruins in the desert routes.

That's what scrapping everything every week gets ya. Dude spent so much time trying to make something "perfect" that he never really made anything at all so when he finally sat down and did something he ended up with the same level of untested, unpolished, clearly inexperienced crap he would have if he just ran with his first drafts. Everyone's first game sucks balls, all chasing something better instead of accepting that and just getting it done accomplished was waste time he could have spent actually building stuff and learning from the experience.

Let this be a lesson to anyone looking to get into rom hacks/fan games: it will not be good so don't get hung up on the details. Just practice, figure out how to do things, what works, what doesn't. Save the dream project for attempt 3 or 4.

I feel somewhat bad but you have to see both sides. people tried to tell him repeatedly to slow down posting or this would happen, and he didn't listen. there's a reason no other dev posts constant progress updates like that, they might drop the occasional tease but mostly wait until they have something significant to show so they don't wear out their welcome.

I get that you were probably putting most of your effort into the fakemon and stuff, but see it from other people's perspectives.
you do seem like you're trying to learn and improve, so good for you. it hurts sometimes to learn a lesson but you gotta learn.

yeah, this is the problem m8. what do you mean the region map?? "only" a couple of years is an insane amount of time to be working on a region map. that's one of the last things that any player is going to give a shit about. what good is the fucking region map if you don't even have any real maps? this is what this guy >>56349611 was getting at, you have focused too much on perfecting little things that you've missed the bigger picture. and you're essentially starting from scratch in terms of actual game development. if you had started development a couple of years ago even though your ideas were rough, instead of fiddling around with the region map which is something that people will look at when they use Fly and otherwise ignore, you would have made so much more progress. and in all likelihood, as you start to actually map things out things won't be exactly as they were in your head, and you're going to end up needing to tweak your region map anyway, making it all a big waste of time. "perfect" presentation doesn't mean anything if you can't actually make a game underneath that presentation. and you're also going to find that perfect presentation doesn't exist, and that your ideas are going to keep morphing as you continue to develop other aspects, and you're gonna kick yourself for not starting the hard work earlier.

I'm trying not to be too rough on you man but you need to take something away from this. I've been in the same boat, well I didn't post about it here, but I've thrown away years of work because I couldn't commit past the ideas stage. art doesn't just magically come out of your hands when you form the perfect idea in your head. you have to work to have the skills to realize those ideas too, and sometimes you have to make a compromise between your ideas and what you can do in reality.

A good day despite not going as planned. I'm never gonna get anything done at this rate though. Not without quitting the job I need to survive, currently I lack the time and energy to do stuff for myself it's all just keeping the meatsuit going and bills paid. Guess the only question now is if I should just go to bed to minimize how much tomorrow will suck and hope my free day next week is more productive, or accept I'm gonna be miserable at work anyways and drink all the caffeine so I can at least bang out some level-up moves. Either way the will to get up and go is gone, and I know that's not gonna change until I push myself to change something about my life.

Fwiw I do love the vibes of some of the screenshots for your game, but like the other anon said sometimes it might be better to hold off until you made more progress.

Assuming you already found Mewtwo, I had an idea regarding an item in that dungeon:
I would have the Old Sea Map that is torn and useless, but you could bring it to an NPC in the past that will exchange it for the original version, which can be used to go find Mew.
It would intertwine Mew and Celebi's events, and give Mew some of that old mystique from gen 1, but I'm forever worried about feature creep at this point. I would also need an NPC to show it to, maybe Maple's mother?

I've got another update. Text, script, and tileset fixes, fixed Exp.All & Exp.Share interaction, change up the Mew event, and nerf early game Rinring by moving Bite to a later level. And adding a few pixels to the sloped roof so it blends in better with surrounding tiles.

I'm working on something similar. It's a Colosseum hack that let's you transfer party members between the active party (Wes), and reserves (Rui). After each battle, she's supposed to either heal her party, increase/decrease heart gauge, or let Shadow Pokemon teach one another moves in slots 3 and 4.
You won't believe how much of a nightmare this has been. Getting new UIs to work in Essentials might as well be rocket science to me. Truly, one of the tools of all time.

One of the biggest reasons I don't like them is because they feel like they're only there because the guy who made it thinks it looks retro.

Apparently it learns it at Lv. 1, so you'll need to hit up the move reminder I guess.
Also I was hyping up Fearow, but I just checked the docs and I don't see Drill Run, even though it learns it in XY+. Must've been an oversight, you could always use PKHeX to hack it in, maybe even a whole Vulpix too if you don't wanna wait.

I get that, I've been pre-meditating teams for so long now that I do it pretty frequently, but there's always a certain level of satisfaction just playing through it normally, which I did do in my own Redux run. The mon availabilty is crazy too, Larvitar and Gible before Burgh is wild.
One thing I do commonly use PKHeX/codes for is giving myself certain shinies I like, at this point I just view (some of) them as preferable pallete swaps.
And being stuck with Piloswine ain't too bad, you get to abuse Eviolite a bit which is always fun.

Yeah, that's the only thing I don't like about it. It's got a pretty cool Pokedex, though. Level scaling in some parts and it upgrades a bunch of trainers to use Johto Pokémon. Oh, and it updates some moves and Pokémon to make them more viable, too.
Meanwhile Perfect has reusable TMs and buffed trainers (based on HGSS).
I don't know.

funny I actually thought it was a GBC hack until it got released today, now makes sense since there is no way a crystal hack could be this detailed.

I personally like the white outlines, but could see how others hate it. Overall excited to try it. part of me wishes it was just a plain vanilla sprite hack, but might be pleasantly surprised
