To me, the remakes only ever made sense to preserve pokemon from that region being obtainable. The GB to GBA gap couldn't effectively be bridged for technical reasons, so FRLG came as a way to keep the Kanto-captured mons alive. Gen 2 was similarly untransferrable, so they eventually made HGSS. Those were necessary, and were incredibly polished final products when compared to the original games and any third versions like International Blue, Yellow, and Crystal.
I loved gen 3, and I liked ORAS a ton and appreciated things like the delta episode and dexnav, but I never really felt a huge need at the time for those games to exist. It wad still possible to transfer up pokemon from Hoenn, which several people did to transfer Hoenn mons "across space and time" to the new Hoenn from GBA. To me, this was the sign that the remakes were shifting to just be expected by fans and that each game would be recycled every so often. With the way BDSP was done, I think my fear became reality. I don't see why people really bother asking for gen 5 remakes when it's now obvious that it would most likely be an outsourced cash-grab and not the thoughtful remasters gen 1 and 2 (and arguably 3) received.
If they do remake gen 5, I fully expect Pokemon Bank to be fully shut down beforehand or at the same time.
