Like Golisopod's First Impression and Emergency Exit, it just works, it doesn't feel bad. Oranguru's Instruct is amazing in doubles. Or Comfey's Triage, it gets the movepool needed to use it, despite being bad.
They tried again in gen 8 and it fell flat for example. Cramorant isn't bulky or fast enough and doesn't have enough physical moves to properly use its ability and the defense drop.
Ice Scales is stuck on something squishy.

Greninja's Mat Block (it's really good in theory) or Cinderace's Court Change are much more blatant examples of special treatment.
