Also, FRLG aren't a DLC that just adds back something that was taken away. They're separate independent games that you might not even buy but trade with a friend who has them but can't get Hoenn Pokemon.

It's literally not the same, and people back when gen 3 was released literally weren't so upset about it as people were when 8 came out. And that was coming off of Pokemania even.
There was also some understanding that GBC<==>GBA trading wasn't possible for technical reasons, and that the way Pokemon work had some major compatibility-breaking changes to make it more refined (EVs), and to remove legacy jank (shared Special DV, HP DV determined by the other 4, shininess and gender no longer determined by DVs).
