I think I have said this before. My mom had a BFF she always spent time with, they went everywhere together, they walked holding hands. Both eventually grew up, married, had children, but stayed close. I'm still in touch with her friend's children. There was never an insinuation of romance, their friendship was just that close.
If they were teenagers today, these schizos would gaslight them into thinking they're lesbians, starting the slope of identity confusion, bitterness and mental instability.
