I'm sorry, am I playing Pokerogue or Natdex Ubers?
I mean, at the very least Volcarona makes her team pretty weak to Stealth Rock, but I'm using Quagsire as my hazard lead and her Blastoise has Freeze Dry
Quag tanked one hit this time and I won but I don't know that I'll be so lucky next time. I'm running a goofy ass team of Quag, Orthworm, Durant, Swellow, Castform, and, until I can find a better fairy type, Azumarill.
I don't know how confident I feel about all this but Quiver Dance Boomburst Castform is pretty funny, and for some reason, Ivy was more than happy to let me set up Quiver Dances against Gholdengo, so maybe it won't be so rough. I hope.

Trying to go for metal burst strat for the first time following the OP guide. Forgot how stressful the early game can be when you don't have a big ass legend to stomp all of it. Was forced to run away form a Raichu because the RNG just hated me on that encounter.

An assortment of items are no longer accessible in the final 10 waves (more are removed at 199, to improve the item pool before eternatus) that would normally be useless in the final biome. And White Herb was apparently deemed too niche of an item for the player, and wasn't particularly useful for the trainers either since they never really used moves that would benefit from having the herb.

Anyway, White Herb would be fantastic if they'd make it work with the Berry Pouch. I'd love to just spam moves like Overheat all day long, and truly, why not? There's far more broken nonsense in the game regardless.

He… kinda sucks. A lot. Arceus only works as a supernuke with access to plates and it’s way too fucking hard to get the plates to drop in this game, much less the type you want. It’s like rolling for tera shards times 1000.

Putting him at cost 9 is a joke. There are cost 5 Paradox mons that can carry harder than he can.

Don’t lead with your rock setter, you have to pivot. Lead with something that will make her swap HER lead on turn one so you can get a free swap to Quags, and fire SR when she either swaps again to counter or fires a move it can (theoretically) tank. The easiest way to beat Ivy is to abuse the switch logic.

Just scammed Ivy with an evasion boosting Jolteon and then E-max with a ghost curse, my first time beating classic without a dedicated carry. Also got the eviolite unlocked because gimmighoul decided to wait until floor 191 to try and evolve, at that point I might as well say no.
This game needs a hall of fame.

That run I ended up losing to the Champion's Tera Flying Gmax Charizard. I've been continuing to try to win with Orthworm, Durant and Castform (because they're all red shinies), and I have a blue shiny Dratini I've added in as well, usually picking up Slowbro and Gyarados early to have some fire switch-ins, and if I run into a fairy I take what I can get

Despite my obviously high luck rank I've had some truly horrendous luck, my last run I didn't get a single EXP ALL drop nor did I get the Mega item for either Slowbro or Gyarados despite making it over 100 battles in. The shinies are making so little difference that I'm thinking of just dropping Castform and Durant so I can make an actual real team

IIRC the only thing luck controls is how often the item drops “level up” to the next rarity (and slightly increases the rarity rolls for boss spawns). It really isn’t that consequential of a thing, even at S rank and above. Which is unfortunate given how much even basic run success is dictated by item roll luck.

They need a more reliable way of getting team building items. I recently got a Mega Bracelet on floor 5 and by 165 I didn’t have any stones drop. Mawile is hopeless without that upgrade, basically a dead slot.

Everyone was salty about that change but I thought it was good, there are plenty of very good mons set up for Contrary abuse (e.g. Magmortar with Armor Cannon, Fleur Cannon and Overheat) it’s not like the war crime is any less performable, it just isn’t ALSO a money factory. Which seems reasonable enough to me, let that be its own role.

Yeah, I know. I stopped playing awhile back and am trying to get into the swing of things again. Looks like the meta around Endless has changed pretty heavily, so I've shifted to trying to get some specific unlocks. Don't even have PH Gligar yet. Exact same nonsense happening. Feels like I need to grind Endless to play Endless since getting Hidden Abilities is an absolute nightmare otherwise. At least my team seems like it can pulverize Ivy and Eternatus (Ivy had the bad luck of getting Delphox this time and somehow a Maractus ended up on her team)

Just completed a classic run with SS+ luck from the start and never even got the mega bracelet, no DNA splicers either just 2 masterballs and a decent amount of gacha tickets. But that's how luck goes.

It feels like a perverse misunderstanding of the roguelike concept to me. The purpose of randomization in a roguelike is supposed to be to negate the advantage of game knowledge. If you don't know in advance what threats to expect or how they are best dealt with, you are forced to play with more caution and emphasize preparedness.

Then you have a game like this, where you know well in advance exactly what all the threats are, and exactly how best to counter them, and the only role of the randomness is to determine whether or not you get access to those things or are doomed to near-mandatory failure and restart.

One thing I don't like about it is that for some reason using Happy Hour makes the game remember your partner as the last target, so you can easily end up killing yourself if you don't pay attention. Not the biggest issue since I usually use spread moves that are unaffected, but still annoying to reset every time I forget.

Running stall in this game usually doesn't make a lot of sense. Not only does it require a lot of lucky rolls to get both the TMs you need (Protect, Toxic, etc) and Leftovers, you're also forced to deal with double battles every now and then (where stall is generally useless), every single stall mon that gets Regenerator only gets it as a hidden ability, and the final boss is immune to poison, won't switch to rack up entry hazard damage, and will probably steal your leftovers, berries and your eviolite with his Mini Black Hole. And as for letting a more offensive mon sponge a hit on switch-in; I can't think of any that wouldn't be better off just evolving
If the game had a mode that was like 50 single battles against only trainers, then eviolite would make a lot more sense

You can’t build a team that RELIABLY counters every uber+ legendary in the game. But you can build one that RELIABLY counters Mega Ray and Eternatus. That means the only real significant threat is whatever box legend you face at 165, and you know that by floor 35 if you’re paying attention because it’s dependant on evil team leader and not random.

What IS random is
>do I get the form/evo items I want
>do I get the TMs I want
>do I get the berries/type items I want
>do I get to go down routes with the mons I want
>do I get high catch balls
Etc etc.

You know exactly what threat you need to counter, the challenge is “will you be given access to the tools or not”. The best way of minimizing that risk is to just use lame carries; you can’t go wrong with Iron Hands or Great Tusk or Kyogre or whatever. You pick Magby, it can work but only IF you get certain things (Magmarizer, Overheat TM).

You're no more guaranteed access to these than you are anything else unless you assign one as a starter, and are you gonna do that every single run? I should damn well hope not
And even if you do bring them, you still generally need to build a decent team and have some checks to various different types. It might not always be possible but part of the fun is seeing if you can't make it work regardless. And that would be lost without the randomization elements. That's what they're for

Yes. Because the entire point of Rogue and roguelikes in general is to try to work around the ability of the player to "solve" the game in the first place. Randomization as a mechanic is to avoid the player knowing what to expect before it happens; permadeath as a mechanic is to avoid the player using failure as an educational experience and retrying with new knowledge.

See this is sort of my point. You can go "I need a bulky water type to have any hope of countering specially offensive fire because my entire team is weak to it right now" and that's tactical and interesting but if the game takes you to power plant and dojo, sucks for you. If you have a carry that's great as long as they can set up, but you never get a Swords Dance or Calm Mind or Bulk Up TM, sucks for you. If you have a Mawile or Beedrill or Sableye or some other mon that's really useful with and only with a Mega, and you never get the bracelet and appropriate stone, sucks for you. If you built your Oddish to be a growth setup giga drain special attacker but you only get sun stones instead of leaf stones, sucks for you.

In a perfect world, IMO, what you are doing is trying to build a team that can handle as wide an array of threats as possible, and then the game throws random threats at you to check if you are as prepared as you think you are. That seems like how a "pokemon roguelike" should work. But PokeRogue does the opposite, you go into it knowing what you will need and just sort of hoping that you get it. Either you take the easy way and use OP starters (and as you yourself point out, nobody wants to do that every single run) or you come up with a clever and interesting way to make shit work with Spinda and Vikavolt and just sit there praying that RNGesus gives you the shit you need.

don't get me wrong, the game is still fun, but lately I feel like any run that I do which tries to make use of interesting passive/egg move combos to do silly shit, I have to either bring along a beefy epic egg backup starter or just prepare to reset the run around floor 80 by default because oops, your build required 3 basic items to drop. I'm getting bored of HO OHKO sweeping with 500+BST carries, I'm trying to make use of all the additional shit, it just feels like you roll the dice and pray way too often for any of it to be viable.

How many runs can I do with a 6-cost carry starter and 3 trash shinies to up the luck stat before the game wears out its welcome?

See this is where you're wrong, because rarely if ever do you go into a run with all six slots filled. Usually you go in with 3, maybe 4, and try to dynamically adjust based on of course whatever the rival's team ends up as, but also just whatever you run into. There are 18 types in the game and only six slots on the team. Even your 500+ BST sweeper is only gonna have four moves and can get screwed over by things like weather or just trainers they have poor matchups against. There's always gonna be opportunity cost. You only know for absolute certain the appearance of two Pokemon across the entire run. Obviously there are generalities that give you an idea of a lot of the rest, but I don't think any of it is enough to say it invalidates running shitmons by necessity. Nor do I think that so many mons absolutely require items as you claim. Mawile is an absolutely terrible example. It's a steel/fairy type. That alone is good enough to force the AI to switch if you bring it in against a dragon. Maybe it can't do much else but it doesn't necessarily need to.
I get that it's frustrating to go whole runs without rolling those items, and in fact I absolutely think that the achievement shop needs to exist to remedy these issues. But the idea that failure is mandatory if you didn't roll them? Well, maybe if you ran a team of 6 Ampharos, but I don't see it otherwise. Just stop running "carries" and see if you can't win with a team like Lokix, Claydol, Tinkaton, Jellicent, Salazzle and Emolga. If you're bored, it's probably because you're making things too easy for yourself.

Which is sort of my point, reliable access to the kit that makes or breaks a build is important. I think getting that sorted out should be a priority for the devs as a key part of balance.

Bro, I had a run fail due to resource exhaustion with a multi-attack Arceus. Never got a plate so I couldn’t control type matchups and never got map so I didn’t get to decide not to go to cave and then volcano, where I got essentially PP stalled by physically defensive rock types that soaked up NVE hits and burned up all my money until I died by attrition. Without any randomly dropped party scaling items (extra Exp Alls, Exp Charms, or candy jars) everything but the Arceus carry was 20 levels behind and constantly got swept if Arc went down.

And look, I get that it just be like that sometime, it’s maybe lame to complain that I couldn’t just freely steamroll with a cost 9 uber legendary. Then again, I couldn’t steamroll with a cost 9 uber legendary. Arceus got walled by a cave full of lvl 50 Gigaliths and Naclstacks. That’s how much damage is done by bad item rolling.

I want the game to challenge me in this context by me setting up Arceus as a Fire Type special attacker and then running into a trainer with a water tera Kyogre and me having nothing in reserve for that. I want to suffer for choosing poorly, not for never being given the opportunity to choose. As you note, you can only pack so much coverage. The fun is in seeing what strategies you can use to maximize effectiveness in a wide array of circumstances. Not in seeing what strategies you are lucky enough to be able to implement
