CHARIZARD has always gotten some extra spotlight, but before Gen 6 it was pretty much always shilled along side the other Gen 1 starters until it got 2 Megas in Gen 6. Then the flood gates opened.
Gen 2
Game Freak hated all of of them. Least shilled starters in history. Least buffed, None of Ash's got fully evolve. TPC even soft banned Typhlosion from the anime for no reason since it never appeared in the Johto anime. Only case of the "popular" starter being actively anti-shilled The only reason Game Freak and TPC hasn't erased them from the franchise is...I don't know.
