From my perspective it fell off hard around the time BW came out in English in 2011. I specifically remember seeing the change through Paheal, when furshit moved from like 25% of uploads to 80%. I remember hearing at the time that people were linking to here from furaffinity too, and I believe it from how godawful this board was in 2011. The first few months when it was /tr/ was like /b/ with Pokémon, but the dead space that came after everyone played the ROMs in September 2010 allowed a lot of shit like multiple roleplaying generals to fester unchallenged. There was a Team Rocket general of roleplayers that started off innocently enough earlier that summer. It was from IGN's greatest video game villain and the board was coordinating a push for Team Rocket against characters like Revolver Ocelot. The recurring thread just seemed like some people getting into the spirit, but it created a real problem when it didn't stop and invited more in. That coupled with all the deviantart tier threads, boring generals, furry threads, and endless low quality threads of "dubs names my starter" made it seem like an unmoderated subreddit for Pokémon autists, and not the cool kind with people who actually do cool shit like crazy RNG abuse. And not only that, but March 2011 inevitably brought in a massive influx of newfags.

I don't think this board was ever as bad as 2011, but Pokémon as a whole has been kind of shit for a while and I feel like the massive normalfag presence with GO in 2016 and the money that brought in didn't help. But I also think that I do see some people doing cool stuff now that I could only wish for years ago. But I remember pre-2011 Pokémon fandom as being like pic related. Most fans were closeted because there was a stigma for liking Pokémon, and when you found someone else who liked it, it was like being on crack.

My group of 3 fell off during Sun/Moon because of XY.
While we met during the Gen 3 days, we all were playin since Gen 1. For Gen 3, 4, and 5, we looked up all the new Pokemon and preplanned our teams to make sure we each had 6 unique Pokemon from the new Dex.
Problem was, Gen 6 had so few new Pokemon, that none of us were really happy with all 6 of our choice; there just wasn’t 18 good Pokemon designs. We even had to half ass our golden rule of only new Pokemon in our E4 teams and use Mega Gen 1 starters as our “new” Pokemon.
We played through XY because that’s just what our crew did; we all played the new Pokemon game together. But by the time Sun/Moon came out, we all just kinda were done with it. XY sucked our passion out so much, that I was the only one to get the new one with Moon, and I couldn’t even finish it.
It’s anecdotal, but I don’t even really know if Sun/Moon were bad games. Never gave them an honest shake thanks to XY

Moon is the first pokemon game I ever experienced a crash in. I can handle the occasional unexpected error the system can't recover from, I'm primarily a pc gamer who grew up having to dig through forums and readme.txt files to get games that came on multiple disks to run on my machine. Consoles are supposed to eliminate that struggle by having consistent, identical environments where any issue is a result of either the game being shit or the hardware being faulty. Crashing the moment you get to the first battle on a new 3ds (as in the updated more powerful model not just a more recently purchased device, I hate Nintendo's product names) when every other game works fine is not okay, and that was far from a random fluke as it would crash at least once a week when I played regularly. XY chugged a bit during horde battles, but never crashed even on the old 3ds and was generally stable after the Lumios city save bug (which it never should have shipped with, this was the canary in the coal mine we all missed telling us things were gonna start going bad fast) got patched.

Doesn't help that the game is also more watch models rotate between popping up text boxes of nonsense like "I think I'll go shopping, but I'm nervous. My mom usually buys all my clothes" than actually playing the game. It spat in the face of the entire concept of pokemon, instead of being a kid going out on an adventure in a world full of magical creatures and becoming a badass, you were a kid on the short bus taking a guided tour with the adults constantly breathing over your shoulders and the other retards never shutting up. At least in XY the others would fuck off and let you do your thing before regrouping to go to the next thing, and there was still stuff to do when the story was done. Gen 7 had like two post-game quests and the battle tree.

Top Down Pokemon design made it so that there was a little useless information on the screen as possible. It's why Lumiose and Castelia are pains in the ass to navigate - because it's not really game design to to press directional buttons just for the sake of doing do. Top-down pokemon games consider navigation and that's mainly because navigation was simple. Once the grid was removed, suddenly I'm running at a snails pace to go nowhere just for the sake of 'being in a wide area'. This evolved further with Gen 8's wild area, where it's a lot of empty and not a lot of things.
Not to mention
>Gen 6 was an explosion of social features wheras Gen 7 was almost a single player game and almost a visual novel for the first hour of the game.

Take your pick there's any number of reasons for the community in its current state.
I miss the days of exchanging a friend code via a Facebook group, swapnoting with someone then eventually outright adding each other on Facebook because you find one another fucking hilarious.
I also miss the days you could well and truly appreciate and be lost in these games. Yeah, sure, Pre-3D games were never as good as they COULD have looked, but they were adequate and charming in their own way. Seeing people bend over backwards to defend SV's looks or straight up trying to justify the low effort games with the reasoning of "well my standards just aren't that high so it's fine" makes you realise how many mouth breathers have infested the community in recent years.
To each their own and all that but fucking hell I wish people weren't so hesitant to voice criticisms and ask for more to be done with this series.

There have been bad years, but I'll never forget just how few worthwhile threads existed in 2011. /vp/ was more or less a containment board to keep Pokémon threads off of /v/ since the catalog would explode every time there was news during pre-release seasons. But it also meant that mods were leaving it to their own devices and letting it fester. I actually wonder if the creation of /mlp/ in late 2010 or early 2011 had something to do with it, since it also relegated autism to one board to keep it off of /co/. This was an era before 4chan was filled with /pol/fags too. We had /new/ back then, and they were also a containment board that everyone else viewed as fucking insane. moot finally nuked it and /r9k/ around early 2012 and brought them back at the end of the year (with /new/ as /pol/) but by then the damage was too late and both boards had infected or astroturfed /v/. But back to /vp/, very few people who were here in 2011 were interested in discussing anything. It was more like a small social media platform filled with tripfags.

I think this has less to do with the era Pokémon was in and more to do with the age group in general.

I must be in the older end for this board, because “you’re still playing Pokemon?” was 3rd Gen for me; late middle school/early high school. 5th Gen was when it ramped back up and I met other people who like Pokemon

XY were the only games ever where there was genuine incentive to interact with as many people as possible. There were no hacks, no online guides day 1, and every part of the world started at the same time. Friend Safaris gave great incentive to add other people, and the PSS made interaction the easiest it's been in the entirety of the franchise.
It's a shame about the singleplayer.

Looking at sales data and contemporary articles, we can see that Pokémon fatigue was setting in not long after Yellow, there are things written by kids who firmly believe Pokémon as a fad is dead. Gold and Silver still sold a huge amount, but it is a drop from Gen I, and it was probably the last hurrah for Pokémania before a lot of kids moved on. Crystal suffered third version sales, but we can see franchise fatigue at that point. Not to mention that a lot of the older kids in this prime demographic range were losing interest faster than the younger kids and would be the first to grow out of it. Ruby and Sapphire certainly was the era of "You STILL play Pokémon?", and from that point fans were more quiet about it out of fear of being scrutinized. The DS era, particularly around the introduction of the DS Lite, was a time when video games were more ubiquitous. It was around this time when "You STILL play Pokémon?" became "You play Pokémon?" with a little bit of hidden excitement and glee, because there were so many closeted fans. The later DS era was when a lot of the original fans were getting old enough to have part-time jobs and an income, or entering college. But we also have to remember that DS emulation made huge strides in the span of a couple years combined with the popularity of R4 cards. BW had so much hype behind it and many people importing it, but it was in the twilight years (subtle pun) of the DS when smartphones were taking off.
