You want to start by looking at Munchstats or something similar to see what people like to use. Steal a team and play. If you're on Showdown, use /dt a lot to figure out what exactly your opponent does. It comes down to repetition. You can learn a lot by watching people play on YouTube, especially people like Pokeaimmd, Jamvad, Blunder, Cybertron, and Wolfe Glick depending what you want to play long-term.
