The crystals themselves seem to just take in energy from anything, converting both organic and inorganic materials to make more of itself.
Originally it appears the whole population of Terapagos converted the energy of this area into the crystals, as some sort of food for themselves (possibly Herba Mystica’s origin). Then came a mass extinction where all but one died. Now it has still been creating more crystals over the eons, but has been unable to keep up with the self replicating mass of crystallized energy, and its cancerous spread across Paldea and other areas the crystals have been brought to, like Kitakami, has resulted in it spreading to Pokémon. Unlike regular organic material, like plants and trees, it’s likely Pokémon convert Terastal energy into Tera Crowns to use it up, probably stemming from Terapagos’ as its own species, being able to convert these into useable energy.
As for why Tera Crowns take different forms, it’s probably stemming just from how Terapagos views the ideas of each of these types, as it seemingly is able to observe things through the crystals because of its own amassed power.
Can’t explain the time travel though, without leaning heavily on the out of universe lore tied to our world.
