No one has actually played these as their first games here, it's all kids and people who don't even like pokemon.
That said, honestly all I can remember from my first RBY run is that I picked Charmander, evolved one of the Nidos(most likely king), picked up Eevee and used Jolteon and soldiered on until I managed to grind Dratini all the way to 55 for Dragonite because I was spoiled about it.

Still remember getting Yellow version as my first game along with a Pokemon edition GBC for Xmas. Was disappointed that i could only choose Pikachu as a starter and was about to stop played. Then i looked on the internet and found out you could get all three starters eventually when got me hyped enough to continue playing and finish the game.

I don't get the hate against gen 1. Some think the 90s were a "cultural dark age" and refuse to acknowledge the Pokemania. They are just seething that they weren't there during the peak.

There was no need to go this far haha. That anon was just seething. Nice teams though. Did you dex all 251? I was way younger when I played which resulted in a lower grind discipline ie overpowered starter and hm slaves. Thinking of playing them again with a future girlfriend

You got lucky yet also unlucky. All I had were schoolyard myths (including scams) and physical walkthrough guides. I fell for the mew truck scam but it was nice that I was able to actually find that truck, I never wad so determined/disciplined in a videogame at that age.

Due to some minor brain damage (don't do sports, kids) I am missing a LOT of memories from my childhood, but here's what I do remember about Gen 1
>1999
>dad bought me a GBC and Blue (the only other game I'd end up getting for it was Link's Awakening DX)
>I chose Squirtle as my starter
>we went over to the neighbour's house for dinner one evening and one of their kids saw that I was playing pokemon. He said that he was bored with his game so he traded me his Mewtwo
>I kept that Mewtwo in my party until I finished the game and caught my own, despite it being more of a hassle to use than levelling up a different pokemon
>I played it on New Year's Eve 2000 at that same neighbour's place they had a pool in the shade, my parents had booze, and no one was left out in the hot Aussie sun
>a rich kid came in to class one day with Yellow and a link cable. He was popular for a while because he was the only way we could battle and trade
>later on he bought Gold and showed off the new mons to everyone in class (soon after the school banned gameboys)
>at some point my dad stopped giving me batteries for the GBC and later tricked me into "selling" it to him for a paltry sum (I can't remember how much, what I wanted or even if I actually accepted the "deal") years later I found out that he sold it and a bunch of my old and "lost" toys over the years for pot
>ended up drifting away from Pokemon in favour of PC and Playstation games

I barely remember buying it and I remember her telling me to pick the version carefully (Gold), but booting it up, seeing the night palette, walking around New Bark to the lab for the first time while hanging off the couch is something I'll never forget. Dunno how I didn't notice other kids playing it at school; the mania had definitely died down in my school by then, so I can assume most kids didn't get the game on day 1 either.
Loved the games so much, I did a bunch of chores and challenges and shit the following year for my mom to get me Silver, then Crystal way down the line. Still have GS but had to repurchase Crystal because an airline 'didn't recognize the tech' and confiscated it despite letting me keep the gbc, which I assume was actually the boomer wanting it for his own collection (may he rest in piss).

Gold was the first pokemon game I played. I remember the first time I beat lance, I only won because my typhlosion hit a dynamic punch on his dragonite and it hit itself in confusion. I also taught my red gyarados zap cannon in the post game.

probably a rare opinion but I think gen 1 has the best plot in the main games. shit gets waaaay too silly later on. gen 1 has this simplicity that reminds me of children's books, it's very engaging.
