On its own, the Pokemon TCG isn't honestly all that fun, but this game managed to nail the cozy late-90s atmosphere, and the weird anime trope where all these characters are obsessed with the same niche interest. The animations, sound effects, and music all really sell the TCG as a battle system.
If you haven't played the sequel, there's an English fan translation floating around. It might obsolete the original, adding new cards, locations, characters, challenges, and a goofy little plot that fits the atmosphere of the TCG Islands.
