Swirlix is a little less on the nose imo. it could pass as just a generic fluff ball monster that happens to resemble cotton candy, where Vanillite can't really be anything other than an ice cream cone.

also I think the Vanillite line would've been better received if they had done something more creative with the evolutions. the line kind of suffers from "it just gets bigger" syndrome. so instead of just one stupid object mon, there's 3 that mostly look the same. I get what they're going for with the baby cone evolving into a double scoop, it's just not clever enough to justify it.

This. I hated the Vanilline when I thought it was ice cream, but once I realized it was supposed to be a pile of snow with icicles coming off it grew on me conceptually. I just hate its stupid goof ass face. I think that ruins lots of mon designs; Eiscue is a fine design too except that it just looks stupid. Like the idea of a mon with a protective outer ice layer that breaks off as a defensive measure is great but why the fuck is it just a cube on its head

Gen 5 was another stopping point for a lot of people so garbage and ice cream will always have more notoriety. Swirlix also just looks like a little puppy thing when standing and klefki overshadowed everything else as the design normalfags complain about in gen 6.
