It would have easily been the best Pokemon game of all time, even if Shadow mons are a gimmick.

It would be an improvement but nowhere near best game. Puzzles and dungeons weren't anything to write home about and the story has nothing other than the novelty of playing as a reformed villain going for it.

The big draw of the game is the shitmon selection and being forced to make due with such a limited roster.

Genuinely baffled when people's complaints show they don't get it.

The roster itself reeks of executive meddling and I say this because when the game first came out it was the only way to obtain several Johto mons.

It's a bit of an oddball and the artstyle is weird as fuck but I do like it. The battle animations are great and it's definitely a unique experience. Also IIRC it has what's essentially Stadium 3 as the multiplayer mode.

By the time you reach Miror B, you have access to Croconaw/Quilava, Makuhita, Quagsire and Flaaffy who are all solid. Even Slugma can be decent due to early flamethrower hitting hard. Maybe stop being bad?

This, and it was gen 3, you didn't have the level of power creep we're used to in recent years as stats weren't so high all around and move distribution was more limited. You didn't have anything crazy good, but you weren't facing anything unfair either. Even the whole slowbro using skillswap on slaking thing wasn't that bad once you knew about it, I don't think I've seen the ai pull it off since my first playthrough 20 years ago.

Umbreon is good if you're playing the game casually. You can be severely underleveled, but it takes hits like a champ. Really useful when you're trying to snag shadow Pokemon. Espeon hits hard, but crumples like paper.

"shitmon" gets thrown around constantly, but if you go back and play gen 2, all of them are viable.

hell, i'd argue that gen 3 pokemon have aged worse because gen 3 mons were designed as slow as fuck mixed attackers due to the lack of physical/special split, which is a major gripe i have with gen 3 in hindsight.

gen 2 designed (most) of its roster around what types they have available, so even a weaker pokemon like Ledian can still get STAB at some point in the game. Umbreon's offensive stats are bad, but it isn't *designed* for offence; it's a pokemon designed for walling and using supportive moves.

i don't think gen 3 is so difficult that the gen 3 mons NEEDED to be specialists in their type or something, but once the split was introduced, pokemon like absol who are just okay mixed attackerss in gen 3 get left in the dust by pokemon who specialise in one stat or another, because the new(and old) pokemon were designed around that; gen 3's answer to the lack of split was to make everything a mixed attacker instead of actually addressing the issue.

Yeah, Jumpluff a "shitmon" by today's standards, has been doing perfectly fine since I added it. People really do exaggerate how bad a lot of old Pokemon are.

I'm just purifying shadow mons in the order I get them and Quilfish just happens to be up next, it's not actually a part of the team. Mantine's just there to take care of the rest of Dakim's team so they didn't EQ Entei. As for hacked, sure if you want to spice things up.

once it has surf it's great because this is gen 3 where it only hits opponents, and it's decency strong. Takes out Dakim's entire team real quick except metang and for that there's umbreon.

What raikou? You don't get that until like half way through the game. If you want an electric type prior to that your options are flaafy or plusle, flaafy/ampharos being more useful up front with static and plusle earning its keep from the boosted exp overleveling it quickly once it catches up.

Nothing, but you have to get as far as the credits before you can trade. Also gen 3 takes longer to grind to level 100 in than newer games.
