I generally do R1 with rentals, but won't touch R2 without a transfer pack. There are way too few rentals that strike a good balance between decent stats and decent moves, so you don't have many options with teambuilding.

With transferred Pokemon, it isn't quite difficult enough that you need to use the handful of overpowered Pokemon. I've gotten through most of it with a Kabutops, Wigglytuff, and Venusaur.

And fuck no it wasn't funner with rentals, most of their movesets sucked.

You weren't getting through prime cup, without missingno glitch, duplicating every TM and leveling your team.

Rentals only is a good challenge, but it's really designed for battling between multiple games with Pokemon from your game. It also has Oak's Lab where you can organize Pokemon and items more efficiently than in the Gameboy games.
