My thoughts? It's fun, I think it's the best spinoff series of Pokemon. A great way to explore the pokemon world more outside of main games, and it focuses on the monsters - the main draw is you ARE a pokemon, and it's a nice narrative driven roguelike rpg with stellar music, decent endearing writing, and a satisfying gameplay loop with lots of content.
The story is, however, probably overrated. By series standards it was considered great, but don't expect anything too profound, it has lots of charm going for it and it's competently written. Gameplay is very repetitive and the gameplay is simple, outside of optional challenges it's also very easy like the main games.
I think what it does better is world building, atmosphere, story telling (haven't played SV though), characters, dialogue. So if you don't mind the style of gameplay and like reading, you should enjoy it.
