They were initially created to foster interaction between players, RBG versions weren't really designed with predatory intentions. I mean the developers were saying things like "I'm imagining the little creatures traveling through the link cable to another cartridge", they were hobbyists not expecting their games to blow up into a billion dollar franchise

Absolutely part of why it initially succeeded and it was tons of fun.... the first time around. Doing it repeatedly and in future installments gets to be a chore though and I really wish there was an item like in PLA to evolve them.
