In real life there are many mistakes when naming an animal, like the word Kangaroo, or when the Basilosaurus was discovered.

In-universum probably the natives of Alola had a name for that Pokemon like Keokeo (A.Vulpix) but when a foreign professor classified it he decided to use the name of the most well-known species in the world.

Personally I wouldn't have minded it like Snowshrew and Snowcrash
