The Japanese names are the only names that are canon. Everything else is just non-canon localized garbage.
Take the name "Bulbasaur" for example. There's a reason why retards growing up (like myself) thought that it was based on a literal dinosaur.

Gamefreak acknowledged the Western name by redesigning the Bulba line and make them more dinosaur-ish.
This is Gen1 Bulba, a cartoon frog, while the redesign gave it a a dino/toad look
