Tyranitar is based on Anguirus, not Godzilla. Its Japanese name is nearly the same.

アンギラス (Angirasu) - Anguirus

Supposedly, Anguirus comes from a truncation and slight modification of ankylosaurus.
アンキロサウルス (Ankirosaurusu)
They got rid of the ロサウ (rosau) and changed the キ (ki) to ギ (gi).

Tyranitar is clearly based on kaiju as a concept, even if you want to disregard Godzilla entirely there's at least a dozen other big giant reptilian monsters that serve the same basis

The source is from a Japanese blog, before SV, I only found these images with a quick google search

That blog explained many of the references used in Pokemon that only a local would know, such as wordplay, Ultraman episodes, radio dramas, or the Japanese perception of 80s pop culture.

Does said blog have a source directly connected to GF itself? Did they talk to a designer from GF? Because if you knew basic JP knowledge of pop culture and zoology, you'd know what most Pokemon are based.
Baxcalibur is based Godzilla, and Tyranitar is based more on the concept of kaiju than any specific monster, but that doesn't really change the point.

A mix between I would the yokai Shussebora, which was a shellfish demon that eventually turns into a type of water dragon, and the kaiju Daigoro, who's a goofy and slow-witted hippo thing.

If I had to speculate, it's because of symbiotic/parasitic evolution (which they also did with Paras -> Parasect) whereby the shellder grows off consuming slowpoke's constantly regenerating tail tissue, but doesn't evolve itself; it attached itself to a host to the point it was no longer its own distinct organism

which is the same idea as with magnemite to magneton and perhaps some other kanto mons; a unique aspect of generation i lore and worldbuilding in the dex
