>>56398147yeah I know RSE get flak for dropping the day/night system and some other stuff which is a shame, but I think people underrate other things it did. like the huge, seamless overworld with no loading screens. that shit was so impressive on the GBA. and while the sprite work isn't really that different than GSC, I think the bright color palette really pops and makes the game still look good.
also I'm just gonna say, the trumpets fucking rock. I love the RSE soundfont.
I would say that Gen 4 felt like a pretty big step forward as well. the semi-3D graphics didn't age very well, but they impressed me at the time. the touchscreen functionality was awesome. and the DS soundchip really pushed their music and sound design forward. as much as I do love the RSE soundfont, they were able to do richer compositions on the DS, and even the Pokemon cries felt so modern.
Gen 5 is probably the first one where it didn't feel like a big evolution to me. don't get me wrong, I like Gen 5 well enough. but where GSC, RSE and DPPT all felt like big leaps to me, BW kind of just felt like Gen 4+.
