>pokemania was full blown at GS release. It had died down by RS, but wasn't killed by either of these releasesI often notice online Pokemon fans have forgotten or are simply ignorant of context. Pokemon was a niche, new thing, and evolved as a franchise over time. The skeleton was in place in 1996, but it wasn't a full-blown well-oiled machine until way later.
Specifically in regards to GS -> RS, there was a longer time between them, so it absolutely cooled off. For me personally, I hated RS in 2003 and then the next game didn't come until 2007. In a way, all the RSbabies grew up on the anime as their main source of new Pokemon content since they had to wait so long for the next new game.
Something people also take for granted now is the localisation time required for each game up until the first international simultaneous release in 2013 with X and Y. For the first 15 years of Pokemon's life in the west, we had to wait nearly a year sometimes for a translation in localisation. After the JP release, the west had a free propaganda campaign in word-of-mouth spergs talking about the Japanese release, building free hype for a year.
Something else notable, is that third versions notoriously underperformed socially - I was the only sperg I knew who played them. Normalcools were good with 1 version out of 3. The remakes were absolutely played more than the 3rd versions.

I didn't realise the killer wait between RS and DP until this post. 4 years is a long damn time. I always focused on the wait between GS and RS.
