I'll post in good faith here. I personally like Gen 5 a lot, mainly BW2, but I also enjoy BW. But I think initially on release it was definitely unfairly hated on and not given a fair shake. But BW does also have some valid problems of it's own that may or may not bother you depending on what you prioritize when playing a game.

I personally really liked being able to use mostly all new mons in BW, it was refreshing and truly felt like a new dimension to the Pokemon world. Not to mention it makes the game very memorable. And it also makes sense considering it was the first game inspired by a region outside of Japan. So all new fauna in a different "country" makes sense. But Game Freak got scared after the reception to BW and walked it back in Gen 6 and put shit tons of Kanto mons in Kalos (Poke-France).

But since then, partially due to general nostalgia, partially due to kids having played BW growing up there's been a backlash against people who hate on BW. Which makes sense because whenever something is super hated on, it just makes the fans of that thing become more aggressive in retalitation. That's been going on for like what 5 years now. Seems like with no BW remakes on the horizon (for now, imo I think they do have them planned within the next 5 years) people are kinda swinging the pendulum back the other way. They did the same to Hoenn post ORAS and Sinnoh post BDSP.

In short, never trust community sentiment, it's very fickle and opinions will depend on the year you ask people as well as whatever retarded video essay is trending on YouTube. Not to mention online spaces are mostly dominated by people under 25 who are more likely than not retarded due to lack of understanding nuance. Everythings either trash or goated.

Honestly, the series needed a reboot at that point in time. The RSE reboot was too early and mainly due to GameFreak's incompetence and inability to allow transfers from Gen 2 to Gen 3. Unlike BW which was completely fresh, RSE still relied on Kanto Pokemon as a crutch to maintain type variation (Alakazam, Machamp, Gyarados, Seaking, Golem, Crobat, Tentacruel, Magneton, Electrode, Vileplume/Bellossom, Dodrio, Muk, Weezing, Sandslash, Wigglytuff, Starmie, Ninetales, Golduck, Kingdra, Pinsir, and Rhydron). It's honestly surprising that there were fewer Johto Pokemon (Azumarill, Skarmory, Magcargo, Wobbuffet, Xatu, Girafarig, Donphan, Heracross, Corsola, Lanturn) than Kanto Pokemon until Emerald and its postgame Safari Zone extension. They had planned for FRLG while making RS and FRLG would have all the Kanto Pokemon anyway? It wouldn't have all the Johto Pokemon; only the crossgen evos and Sevii Islands mons. So it would make more sense to include more Johto Pokemon and fewer Kanto Pokemon. So either it was to force people to get a Gamecube for Colosseum, or because of Kanto privilege. It's probably a mix of both, but I'm betting on the latter because GF doesn't even acknowledge the existence of Colosseum and XD and we know how much Junichi Masuda loves the original 151.
