why does the normal type even exist? its just so .... blah. no ones favourite 'mon is a normal type. theyre like the filler type of 'mons

Pokemon, originally titled Capsule Monsters, was originally conceived as a more tradtional JRPG akin to Dragon Quest and similar games. It even was going to have the first-person perspective with just enemy sprites visible in battle the way Dragon Quest does. As part of this, there were going to be ways for the trainer to directly attack the monsters on their own, and all monsters would have a mix of magical/elemental attacks and normal attacks like what the player used. A lot of this stuff got changed or removed in what we got in Red and Green, and the Normal type was what became of these non-elemental attacks. It's why so many level-up movesets in gen 1 are nearly all Normal type moves. It ended up filling a good niche for monsters that didn't have any obvious elemental theming, and in gen 1 and 2 ended up being one of the most powerful (but easily countered) typings, so no one was really clamoring to remove or change it.

Yes the bug element is very important to science, as are the psychic and fighting elements. The flying element was pivotal during the renaissance.

My favourite mon is Sawsbuck, and that is a Normal Type.

That aside, between Snorlax, Meowth (bolstered by the anime) Jiggly/Clef lines, Eevee, Ditto, Bibbarel, all the starter birds and rodents, etc. - there's a lot of people who love normal type pokemon
