The game with the best main game is Platinum. Emerald and FRLG are too easy.

I think that despite its pacing, every other game lacks either intrigue too, challenge, or aesthetic pleasantness.

None of the games are perfect. Platinum isn't even my favorite. But I'd rather play it the whole way through than my favorite, and would recommend the same to others.
