Furthermore Serena got to win the main round and challenge the reigning Kalos Queen Aria while Ash couldn't even win the Kalos League to challenge the reigning Kalos Champion Diantha which feels even more off.

Winning a league conference was just an qualification round to challenge a region's Elite 4 and its Champion. Ash could have won the Kalos League but failed to win the Champion League due to losing to Drasna would have opened door for Ash to go to Alola to take the Island Challenge to train himself further which eventually leads to Alola first league with its actual Elite 4 as Ash takes the throne as the Champion. Instead we gotta an village league that couldn't even afford a full battle while all the Elite 4 of Alola became a fodder that can't even defeat Kiawe.
At the end, we never got to see Ash win an actual League conference and challenge an actual Elite 4 all because some selfish executive couldn't choose Ash over his self insert Alain.
